Our experience dining at Ruedihus Kandersteg
We had dinner at Ruedihus when we hiked the Via Alpina in June 2020. We loved both the building and the food. The facade and interior of this farmhouse turned into the restaurant is a reflection of Swiss craftsmanship. Authentic Swiss food is prepared with excellence. This is Swiss traditional gastronomy at its best. Read more about our experience dining at Landgasthof Ruedihus below.
Arrival at Ruedihus Kandersteg
We walked up the road to Landgasthof Ruedihus around 6 pm. From a distance, the building looks like a typical Swiss farmhouse. I was impressed by the many wooden carvings on the facade. The renovation works were done with a lot of care and respect for the traditional style of the houses in this area of Switzerland. Getting closer, we walked by the garden where herbs and vegetables are grown.
Tiled stoves and wooden chairs in the dining room of Ruedihus Kandersteg
The interior looked like we’d picture a farmhouse in the canton of Bern from the 18th century. Wooden beams adorn and carry the ceiling. Tiled stoves in the corner are heating the room. Wooden chairs with beautiful carvings stand around tables; on them white tablecloths. Even the silver cutlery and the plates seem to be from another Epoque. Everything was simple but beautifully arranged. Matthias had to be careful not to hit his head – people back then were smaller and ceilings were lower.
Only Grandma’s cooking tastes better
We sat at our table in the corner of the dining room and studied the menu. I heard many good things about their butter noodles. In Switzerland, we call it “Nüdeli” and they are cooked longer than one would normally cook pasta. And – most importantly – they get a portion of extra butter before they are served. Delicious! My pasta lover’s heart started beating and we finally ordered a carrot cream soup as a starter and sliced pork in a cream sauce with noodles Bernese style as the main dish.
If you had grown up in canton Bern, the sliced pork in cream sauce with noodles (in Swiss German: Nüdeli mit Gschnätzletem in Rahmsauce) is the dish your grandma would have served on Sunday family gatherings. All our dreams came true: The pasta with butter and the meat were simply delicious. And gone in no time.
