Our experience on the Emmenuferweg from Chappelbodenbrücke – Entlebuch – Schüpfheim

We were on the Emmenuferweg in June. It was a hot June day! We wanted to do a hike where you can cool off along the way. We had heard from friends that the hike along the Emmenuferweg is ideal, especially on hot days. Hikers walk along the river most of the time under tall trees protected from the sun. Read more about our experience hiking the Emmenuferweg here.

Arrival: from Wolhusen to Chappelbodenbrücke to Emmenuferweg

We traveled from Lucerne by train to Wolhusen. There, we changed to the post bus, which chauffeured us to Chappelbodenbrücke. We were already standing in the middle of the wilderness. From the bridge we looked down on the Kleine Emme river. Between the rocks in the river were bathers, who were cooling off on this hot June day. We followed the signpost on the left.

On the Emmenuferweg from Chappelbodenbrücke to Entlebuch

To start, we shared the wide gravel path with some cyclists and other hikers. To our right, the green Emme River glistened through the trees. The sound of the water immediately put us in a meditative state. Apart from the sound of the water, we heard nothing – except maybe now and then a train running on the line between Wolhusen and Entlebuch.

Lots of forest and lots of animals on the Emmenuferweg

After about half an hour, the path became narrower. We crossed a forest with tall trees. At times it became almost dark. We were glad, because that day it was simply too hot to hike in the sun. After another half hour, we came to a sort of clearing where someone had built a nice house. We sat down on a bench and listened to the birds. The flora and fauna are very diverse. After a few minutes, a butterfly kept us company.

Pure nature is the correct expression here. The Kleine Emme between Entlebuch and Chapelbodenbrücke was not influenced by the human hands. The course was left as nature intended. There are no retaining walls or anything like that.

The hike on the Emmenuferweg is a pure nature experience. The highlight for us was cooling off in the Kleine Emme. There are many different places, which are ideal for a jump into the cold water. Herewith we share with you our favorite. The place is a bit more remote. You feel here in the middle of nature and forget that you are in tiny Switzerland. If you’re in the middle of the riverbed, you could be anywhere else – Canada, for example. In any case, jumping into the cold water was the best decision and we were happy that we had packed the swimwear in the backpack.

A cool down in the Emme at the Emmenuferweg

We hadn’t been on the road for an hour yet and felt like we had been out in the wilderness for days. On the Emmenuferweg you can switch off perfectly. It doesn’t have as many people as elsewhere and the wandering crowd is well distributed. Occasionally we saw people comfortably picnicking by the river. Oh yes: there are also fireplaces along the way. So if you like to barbecue you can pack the barbecue goods in your backpack. About 15 minutes before Entlebuch we spotted a poster with a reference to the Restaurant Bahnhöfli. For us, it was clear that we will not to a barbecue 😉

Hike on the Emmenuferweg from Entlebuch to Schüpfheim

For all those who did not stay in the Restaurant Bahnhöfli and who still have strength, the hike continues in the direction of Schüpfheim. The Emmenuferweg, which is somewhat wider here, continues – as the name suggests – along the Kleine Emme. Later the path leads along cow pastures and partly over old wooden bridges. This part of the Emmenuferweg is more open and you have a wide view of the Schrattenfluh and other mountains in the Entlebuch region. After about 3:15 hours of hiking, we reached our destination Schüpfheim. From Schüpfheim you can take the train in the direction of Bern or Lucerne resp. to continue the next day in the direction of Sörenberg along the Kleine Emme.

Hike&Dine tip for ambitious hikers: extension at the start / end of the Emmenuferweg from Chappelbodenbrücke – Wolhusen / Wolhusen Neuemsern Rosei

Matthias has a tip for all those who set the Restaurant Bahnhöfli in Entlebuch as the destination of the hike. Start your hike in Wolhusen Neuemsern Rosei instead of Chappelbodenbrücke. It thus takes about 45 minutes longer. On this section, you will discover another branch of the Kleine Emme, the Fontanne. The trail goes up and down more here than on the rest of the Emmenuferweg. For Matthias it is clear: pleasure hikers should start in Chappelbodenbrücke. All others: You are spoiled for choice.

Conclusion of our hike on the Emmenuferweg from Chappelbodenbrücke – Entlebuch – Schüpfheim

We recommend this stage of the Emmenuferweg to all hikers who are looking for an easy hike and enjoy walking in forests. We liked this hike very much because it is not too difficult and yet you are completely immersed in another world. The swim in the Kleine Emme was a welcome refreshment. We think that this hike is very suitable for all age groups and also families. There are many places to sit and grill along the way. If you want to experience a day of pure nature, the Emmenuferweg is the place to be.

Hiking suggestion: 3-day hike along the Emmenuferweg

In this post, we describe the 2nd stage of the Emmenuferweg. The entire Emmenuferweg namely leads from the source of the Kleine Emme in Sörenberg to its mouth in Emmenbrücke. This path can be walked in three days. Here are the stages:

1st stage: Sörenberg – Schüpfheim
2nd stage: Schüpfheim – Entlebuch – Wolhusen
Stage 3: Wolhusen – Emmenbrücke

Of course, the Emmenuferweg can also be walked in the opposite direction. In this post, we describe what we consider the most beautiful stage of the Emmenuferweg. The beauty of the Emmenuferweg is that it is also suitable for a winter hike. We wish you a lot of fun while discovering.

Practical information for the Emmenuferweg

How to get there: Take the train from Lucerne or Bern to Wolhusen. From Wolhusen take the Postbus 242 just before the train station to the Chappelbodenbrücke stop [car drivers: parking possible]. As always, you can find the connection for public transport in the SBB timetable.

The hike is relatively self-explanatory and very well signposted. Just follow the official hiking signs.

Eating on the hike along the Emmenuferweg: Reserve a table at the Restaurant Bahnhöfli in Entlebuch. The phone number of Restaurant Bahnhöfli is 041 480 13 25, and the e-mail [email protected]. And greet Willi the host from us 🙂

In summer, be sure to bring your swimsuit. There are endless opportunities to take off your hiking boots and put your feet in the cool water.

There is good news for barbecue fans: There are many fireplaces on the Emmenuferweg.

The best time for this hike is March – October. However, Willi Felder from Bahnhöfli Entlebuch told us that you can also do the hike in winter. Here and there it is a bit icy, but beautiful.
