Our stay at the Hotel Walther in Pontresina
Arrival at the Hotel Walther in Pontresina
We traveled to Pontresina by train for a weekend. The chauffeur was already waiting for us at the Pontresina train station. In only 5 minutes we reached the main entrance of the Hotel Walther. We passed the imposing entrance door. The reception team at the Hotel Walthers greeted us in an extremely friendly manner and we felt immediately at home.
A short tour through the Hotel Walther
Immediately after check-in, the receptionist showed us around. So we discovered the bar with a sea of lamps on the ceiling. We got our first glimpse of the Grand Restaurant. We were looking forward to the dinner in the large Art Nouveau dining hall with high ceiling and large windows. On the way back to the reception we passed the Smokers Lounge – and there it was in front of us: the lobby. Comfortable armchairs and camiers in various colors and shapes invite guests to relax and linger. On this beautiful autumn day, golden yellow sunbeams shone on the splendid parquet.
Aperitif on the veranda of the Hotel Walther
We opened the door to the terrace, sat down at one of the small tables, and listened to the wind rustling through the trees in the hotel garden. Time for a glass of wine. Sheltered from the wind, we sat on comfortable wicker chairs and let the sun shine on our faces. From the veranda, the view of the green hotel garden and the mountains opens up. We were hungry and decided to have a vitello tonnato. It was a dream. Luckily, we sat there and enjoyed the moment. A deep calm filled us. There is no other place in the Engadin like the veranda at Hotel Walther – we agreed on that.
Dinner at the Hotel Walther in Pontresina
We took a seat at our beautiful table, which was set in white and equipped with silver cutlery. We decided on half board when booking. It comes with a 5-course menu. The full-bodied yet fine wine pressed on Basel-Städter soil, turned out to be a stroke of luck.
It went perfectly with the second starter, a shrimp on wild rice. Then Solène’s favorite dish of the evening was served, a small but fine portion of spaghetti Pomodoro. The Italian classic harmonized perfectly with the wine.
Tender meat, a little cheese and a whiskey sour in front of the fireplace
Matthias’s favorite dish was beef with potato gratin. The meat was tender, the sauce was perfectly seasoned and the zucchini snail was artfully wrapped and crisp. Due to our sporty afternoon activities, we also had enough appetite for the last course: a sorbet and a slice of cheese for Matthias. We ended the evening not in the hotel bar but at the fireplace in the lobby with a whiskey sour. Splendid.
Conclusion: We want Walther
We spent one night at the Hotel Walther in Pontresina and we are blown away by the warm hospitality, the high-quality cuisine, and the beautiful hotel. The visit in late autumn was ideal to enjoy the sunny hours on the veranda. We felt very comfortable in Hotel Walther. The mixture of soft modern in the traditional Belle Epoque house appealed to us very much. The location of the Hotel Walthers is excellent for exploring the nearby mountains. We did – with a wonderful hike. We want Walther – we’ll come back, I promise!
