The village of Wengen in Switzerland is world-famous for the spectacular views to mount Jungfrau and the Lauberhorn ski-run. However, there is a hidden secret people do not yet know: Hotel Schönegg. The impressive building with the yellow facade stands elevated overlooking the village. On sunny days guests can dine on the beautiful garden terrace surrounded by iconic mountains while sampling the local cuisine.

Our experience dining at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen

We stayed and ate at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen when we hiked the Via Alpina in June 2020. We loved this small hotel with a French touch for its terrace with an amazing view to the Jungfrau. The cuisine serves delicious Swiss food. Read more about our dining experience at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen below.

About the Hotel Schönegg in Wengen

The interior of the hotel is charmingly lined with wood and of rustic yet upscale style. Wood and white fabric also set the tone of the indoor dining space where breakfast for hotel guests is served in the mornings. According to the owner the wood used to build the restaurant’s walls and ceiling originates from an old Wengen house which was more then 100 years old

When we first entered the room the light was shining through the large windows filling the wooden interior with a warm vibe. We immediately felt at ease and wanted to sit down in this cozy space until we spotted the terrace.

Dining on the terrace of Hotel Schönegg in Wengen

The terrace looks like a miniature version of the garden of Eden or at least how we would picture it! The terrace of Hotel Schönegg is paved with black stone plates and the green trees to protect food aficionados from the sun on hot summer days. A little water fountain completes the paradise-like arrangement. One can listen to the peaceful splashy sound of the water while spacing out into an almost meditative state. Obviously, we decided to eat outside.

The Aperitif: A glass of Sauvignon on the terrace with a view to mount Jungfrau

We started with a white a dry sauvignon blanc to get into the mood. It was a sunny summer day and we were almost the only guest on this day. We lay back, smiled and zipped on the glass of wine with a view. It was a truly relaxing moment, almost meditative.

Dining at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen: The Starter Part 1 – Veal tartar with truffle cream and buttery brioche

We were not in the mood for ordering the set menu. Therefore we ordered à la carte. We were served sliced salmon sashimi with a homemade cracker, black sesame seeds and a horseradish mousse. The amuse bouche was garnished with fresh herbs and presented on 2 porcelain spoons. To start with we decided to share the veal tartar with lime vinaigratte and truffle cream, served with a heavenly buttery brioche.

Dining at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen: The Starter Part 2 – Summer Salad and Truffle Tagliolini

Our pick for the second starter was a summer salad with pieces of melon, turnip bits, garnished with popcorn and dressed with a sherry vinaigrette. This dish tasted like a perfect summer day in a bowl. The salad with pieces of fruits dressed with the slightly acid vinaigrette was a light and right choice.

As we wanted to taste as many dishes as possible, we decided to share a portion of the homemade tagliolini with a rich truffle sauce. This was such an excellent choice that we almost forgot to take a picture of our favourite course that evening.

For the main course we switched to red wine. The Pinot Noir from Pircher in Zurich paired perfectly with the creamy truffle tagliolini.

Dining at Hotel Schönegg in Wengen: The mains – Lucerne beer porck chop and an aspargus lasagne

Matthias chose the Lucerne beer pork chop with truffle jus, mashed potatoes and summer vegetables – the speciality of the house. As Matthias grew up in Lucerne, he had no other choice but to try this.

My choice was the lasagne with asparagus. It was a tasty and rich meal and it made me feel great! We decided not to go for desserts as the generous portions were satisfying. A wonderful meal in the garden of Eden. The perfect location to end the perfect hiking day. I am still dreaming about the Talioglini. Mmmmm….so delicious!
