Our experience staying at Hotel Bellevue des Alpes on Kleine Scheidegg
We stayed at Hotel Bellevue des Alpes in June 2020 while we hiked on the Via Alpina. We fell in love with this beautiful belle epoque hotel. Read more about our stay at Hotel Bellevue des Alpes on Kleine Scheidegg below.
About the Hotel: Belle époque nostalgia on Kleine Scheidegg
When we walked through the brass-steel revolving entrance door, we felt transported to the Roaring Twenties. Most of the inventory dates back to this era and is well preserved. If you expect a TV in your room, you are in the wrong place. Instead, an old Swiss phone (Modell 70) greeted us. The bathrooms have been renovated with love. And we had a room with a perfect view.

In its early days, the hotel accommodated mostly the pioneers of mountain tourism, mainly the Brits. Numerous climbers from near and far came to the hotel to climb the north face of the Eiger. The English influence might explain the interior design of the hotel.

The Aperitif: The Eiger, mount Jungfrau and a bottle of Pouilly-Fumé on the terrace
We took the aperitif on the terrace in front of the hotel. Three different kinds of dried meat were served with regional cheese, pickles, and silver skin onions. With it we drank an elegant dry Pouilly-Fumé Villa Paulus (2017) from the Domaine Masson-Blondelet. While we ate the plate of regional mountain delicacies we soaked in the views of mount Eiger and Jungfrau.

The Diner Part 1: The best pea soup in the Swiss Alps
We arrived at the diner around 7 pm in the high ceilinged dining room. We decided on the pea cream soup as a starter, which turned out to be an excellent choice. The whole peas draped as garnish were and are the epitome of what this vegetable should taste like. The color of the soup, which was finely seasoned and spiced, was also almost vividly green. We paired the soup with a light red wine.

The Diner Part 2: burrata, salmon and a cherry on the top
The next course consisted of a burrata with summery sweet-tasting tomatoes. This Mediterranean composition was complemented by a few leaves of Romana salad, carpaccio of radishes, and toasted bread. I am a total Burrata fanatic so I loved this second course!
For the main, we ordered the salmon with garden vegetables on a fine apple vinaigrette. The fennel, potatoes, and the peas were perfectly steamed and had bite and taste. The fish was tender and in combination with the sour apple vinaigrette truly refreshing. For dessert, we put the cherry on top! The red fruit was served with an airy zabaglione mousse and garnished with coarse nougat brittle.
The Digestif: Whiskey Sour on 2000 meters above the sea
After the sweet temptation, it was time for an after-dinner cocktail. The barman prepared a Whiskey Sour (with egg white) for Matthias and I asked for a Moscow Mule with gin instead of vodka. What a bitter-sweet way to end a perfect day on 2000 meters.
