Our experience hiking the Via Alpina from Wengen to Mürren

We hiked on the Via Alpina from Wengen to Mürren in June 2021. This is one of our favorite hikes on the Via Alpina. We hiked in the tracks of J.R.R. Tolkien in Lauterbrunnen valley and enjoyed unforgettable views of the Jungfrau. We discovered the picturesque village Mürren and met 007 on Piz Gloria. Goodbye Wengen, hello Lauterbrunnen valley

Leaving Wengen is never easy! The view from Hotel Schönegg to mount Jungfrau and the afternoons on the hotel’s sunny terrace will be missed! A little bit sad we packed our backpacks and hit the Via Alpina hiking trail. At the exit of the village, Lauterbrunnen valley lay to our feet and all the sadness was gone: What a view! Goodbye Wengen, hello Lauterbrunnen valley!

Lauterbrunnen valley – Home of Lord of the Rings

Waterfalls, trees, and snowy mountain peaks – it’s quite obvious why the 19-year-old J.R.R. Tolkien found his inspiration for Lord of the Rings in Lauterbrunnen valley when he visited Switzerland back in 1911. Enchanted by the beautiful landscape we hiked along the path next to Wengernalp train to Lauterbrunnen. Time for a coffee break!

Hike&Dine: Dine at Hotel Regina in Mürren

“The dining room of this Art Deco hotel struck me. Through the high windows, I watched the last sunbeams of the day caress the mountains on the other side of the valley. What happened in the halls of Hotel Regina over the last century? I discarded the thought and ordered another glass of Champagne.”

It was a hot summer day and we knew that the hike to Mürren would be steep. We filled our bottles with water and attacked the 960 meters uphill. To most parts, the trail leads through a forest. The shade of the trees protected us from the sun. Still, this ascent was a challenge and we had to take breaks many times.

Finally, we reached Winteregg. The gravel road from there to Mürren was an easy walk. We savoured the stunning views to the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. For the last hour, we hiked close to the tracks of the Mürren railway with its beautiful Belle Epoque train wagons. What a joy it was to hike on this trail on this lovely summer day!

5 hours after we left Wengen we arrived in the village of Mürren. We have never seen a village like it. The buildings along the main street look like they are waiting in a row to jump from the cliff. The biggest challenge for me was the balcony in our hotel (Hotel Edelweiss). I still don’t understand how Solène could sit out there. I got dizzy from only looking at her while she floating “in the air” and having a glass of wine.

Hike&Dine Tip

Piz Gloria: On her Majesty’s Secret Service

If you are in Mürren visit Schilthorn. The views of mount Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau are truly among the best in Switzerland. The panoramic restaurant with the iconic name Piz Gloria was built in the 1960s. The building was named after a fictional mountain peak in the James Bond movie “on her majesty’s secret service” (1969) in which it served as the headquarters for 007’s arch enemy Ernst Stavro Blofeld. Today there is a James Bond exposition (Bond world) and cinema where key scenes from the movie are shown. Visitors can learn more about the film shooting on Piz Gloria and Mürren. I had a blast up there and loved the moment when you get in the cable car and hear the theme of the James Bond movie.
